The EU for Global local Citizen’s Panel in Spain took place on the 19th of September 2025. During the panel the European Union and its history and current state was discussed. The panel focused on key topics facing the EU today such as the lack of democratic participation, the need to defend core EU values and engage in the promotion of knowledge sharing and dialogue between EU institutions and citizens.
To ensure its long-term sustainability and relevance, the EU must look both inward and outward:
- Strengthen Democratic Participation
Combat apathy and the democratic deficit by encouraging youth to vote, debate, and engage actively in European elections ; Legitimacy depends on citizen involvement. - Foster a Shared European Identity
Expand programs like Erasmus+, scholarships, and cultural exchanges to strengthen a sense of belonging. Education in EU history, values, and institutions can cultivate solidarity while respecting diversity. - Defend Core Values
Protect democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and inclusivity. Public awareness campaigns and support for civil society initiatives can reinforce these principles against rising challenges. - Promote Knowledge and Dialogue
Encourage informed discussions on EU affairs, both in classrooms and in public spaces, to counter misinformation and deepen understanding of the Union’s role in the world. - Strengthen Solidarity Across Borders
Everyday actions of cooperation, cultural exchange, and mutual trust build the EU not only as a network of institutions but as a community of people.
